The Game of Dominoes

domino

The game of domino is one of the many family-friendly tile-based games. The dominoes are rectangular tiles with square ends marked with a number of spots. The goal is to place the tiles so that they face each other and match up. When all the pieces are in a row, the player wins the game.

Basic rules

The basic rules of domino are very simple and easy to remember. You start the game by placing three or four dominoes at the base of the game board. The goal of the game is to get the highest score by matching the end of the tile to the first tile in your hand. This game can be played with two or more players. It is an excellent way to socialize and work as a team.

Variants

There are many variations of the classic domino game. The most basic form is called block domino. This version is played by two players and requires a set of double-six tiles. Each player alternately draws seven tiles and places them along a line. In this variation, the player with fewer pip spots wins.

Game pieces

Game pieces of domino are traditionally two by two squares with a single line running through the middle. The squares on either side are called ends and represent their value. Most commonly, the dominoes have six pips each, but there are also variants with no pips. The sum of these spots is called weight.

Placement on table

To play the game of dominoes, players must play the tile onto the table. The tile must touch the end of the chain with the same number. A player who plays a domino with the same number at both ends is said to have “stitched up” the end of the chain.

Effects on nerves

The domino effect is similar to the way neurons and nerve cells behave. Each one of them passes an impulse that causes a chain reaction. The process involves a sequence of sodiums inside the cell and potassiums outside the cell followed by polarization.

Chinese origins

The game of dominoes originates in China, and dates back to around 1120 AD. Western travelers to the Far East reported on them in the Renaissance, and the game is still popular in Asian countries today. Chinese dominoes look very different than their Western cousins and are played differently. For example, the Chinese set is different in size and is made of a different material. It may have been made of ivory or bone, or it could have been made of plastic or composite materials.
